On the agenda this time: Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi Latin for Body of Christ celebrates the tradition and believe in the body and blood of Christ and his presence in the Eucharist. During his last supper with his disciples on the eve of his death on the cross, Jesus declared that bread and wine epitomize his body and blood and therefore shall remain signs of his presence in the Christian community. Corpus Christi celebrates this presence of Christ amongst his followers.
With Corpus Christi, however, we’re not only taking on a Catholic, but also a very Texan topic. Why? Because the “Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ” has entered into English by the Latin name of “Corpus Christi”. And that is – as some of you may know – a coastal city in southern Texas by the Gulf of Mexico. It’s not very hard to guess when this lush, semi-tropical bay was discovered – exactly, on the day of Corpus Christi (in 1519). Tourist brochures like to advertise the city as the “Riviera of Texas” and the “Sparkling city by the sea”.
There are quite a few things to say about Corpus Christi. As a port city, it was of course the scene of some fighting during the American Civil War, in which – as is to be expected – the Union Navy defeated the Confederates. Also owing to the fact of being a port city is the repeated suffering from hurricane damage. Major destruction was inflicted by hurricanes “Celia” in 1970 and “Allen” in 1980.
Architecturally interesting to me seems the miniature-version of “The Coathanger” i.e. the Sydney Harbor Bridge Corpus Christi sports. This kind of construction somehow appears to be popular for railway and harbor bridges. Most tourists, though, come to the city to visit the floating museum “USS Lexington”. The USS Lexington is an aircraft carrier that was built during World War II, referred to as “The Blue Ghost” by the Japanese. This on the one hand owing to its blue camouflage on the other hand because it had a tendency to reappear after reportedly being sunk. One of these rumors at some point proved to be true, but the Americans quickly built a replica of the ship and immediately deployed it under the same name, in an effort to demoralize the Japanese. Sly tacticians, these Yankees.
And even though you might not recall it right away, most of you actually have seen the “USS Lexington” before. What now, when? In the movie “Pearl Harbor”. All the aircraft carrier scenes in the movie were filmed on that very blue ghost. Well, who would have thought. The male movie lovers among you guys, however, may be more interested in this last, significant fact about Corpus Christi: The port city is hometown to the very attractive Eva Longoria 🙂
Now for me as a new Texan, Corpus Christi represents but one thing: The pride to finally live in a coastal state 😉

Und schon wieder ist es soweit… die katholische Schweiz kommt erneut in den Genuss eines Feiertags. Ist das zu glauben? Kaum vorstellbar, dass die jemals was fertiggestellt kriegen…
Dieses Mal auf dem Programm: Fronleichnam. Mit Fronleichnam gedenkt die katholische Kirche dem Leib und Blut Christi. Jesus nahm am Vorabend seines Kreuzestodes sein letztes Abendmahl mit seinen Jüngern ein und erklärte Brot und Wein zu bleibenden Zeichen seiner Gegenwart in der christlichen Gemeinde. Dieses unter uns sein wird mit Fronleichnam gefeiert.
Mit Fronleichnam nehmen wir uns allerdings nicht nur eines katholischen, sondern auch eines sehr texanischen Themas an. Wieso? Weil das „Hochfest des Leibes und Blutes Christi“ ins Englische mit der lateinischen Bezeichnung „Corpus Christi“ eingegangen ist. Und das ist eine Küstenstadt im Süden von Texas, am Golf von Mexiko. Nicht schwer zu erraten, wann die üppige, halb-tropische Bucht entdeckt wurde – klar, an Fronleichnam (1519). In Touristenbroschüren wird die Stadt auch gerne als die „Riviera von Texas“ und die „Glitzernde Stadt am Meer“ beworben.
Über Corpus Christi gibt es so einiges zu berichten. Als Hafenstadt war sie natürlich im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg Schauplatz einiger Kampfhandlungen, welche – wie nicht anders zu erwarten – die Union Navy gegen die Konföderierten gewann. Ebenfalls der Tatsache eine Hafenstadt zu sein zu verdanken hat Corpus Christi die regelmässige Heimsuchung von Orkanen. Grössere Schäden haben vor allem „Celia“ 1970 und „Allen“ 1980 hinterlassen.
Architektonisch interessant erscheint mir, dass Corpus Christi einen Miniaturversion des Australischen „Kleiderbügels“ (coat hanger), also der Hafenbrücke in Sydney, vorzuweisen hat. Die Bauweise scheint irgendwie beliebt für Eisenbahn- oder Hafenbrücken. Touristen besuchen die Stadt aber vor allem, um das schwimmende Museum «USS Lexington» zu begutachten. Die USS Lexington ist ein Flugzeugträger, der während des Zweiten Weltkriegs gebaut und von den Japanern auch „der blaue Geist“ genannt wurde. Dies einerseits wegen ihrer blauen Tarnfarbe und andererseits weil sie die Tendenz hatte, immer wieder aufzutauchen, nachdem sie vermeintlich versenkt wurde. Eines dieser Gerüchte bewahrheitete sich zwar tatsächlich, doch die Amerikaner bauten schnellstens eine Replik und sandten diese unter dem gleichen Namen wieder aus, um die Japaner zu demoralisieren. Gerissene Taktiker, diese Amis.
Und auch wenn ihr euch jetzt nicht gerade daran erinnern mögt, die meisten von euch die «USS Lexington» schon einmal gesehen. Wie jetzt, wann das denn? Im Film «Pearl Harbor». Die Flugzeugträger-Szenen im Film wurden auf eben diesem blauen Gespenst gefilmt. Tja, wer hätte das gedacht. Die männlichen Filmliebhaber unter euch wird aber eher dieser letzte, nennenswerte Fakt zu Corpus Christi mehr interessieren: Die Hafenstadt ist der Heimatort der äusserst attraktiven Eva Longoria 🙂
Für mich als Neu-Texanerin vertritt Corpus Christi aber vor allem eines: Den Stolz, endlich in einem Land mit Meeranstoss zu wohnen 😉
