This week I happened upon an article about the commencement address to the University of Texas in Austin graduates by Naval Admiral William H. McRaven. And I have to admit: I was smitten by it. Not only do I finally understand and even acknowledge the wisdom of a rigorous military drill, but I realize that if the graduate students take his words to heart and carry his message out into the world, in only a few generations time, our world could be a way different place.
As a Navy SEAL, McRaven had to undergo the toughest and most intense military training anyone could possibly receive in the world. After only a few weeks, his SEAL class, starting out with 150 men, was reduced down to 35. That’s how tough the training was. And the drill was by far not over by this time. But he went on. And thanks to that we can now learn 10 valuable lessons from him.

Diese Woche bin ich auf einen Artikel zur Rede von Marine-Admiral William H. McRaven vor der Abschlussklasse 2014 der Universität von Texas in Austin gestossen. Und ich muss gestehen: Ich war hingerissen. Nicht nur, dass ich endlich ein paar gute Gründe für eine rigorose Militärausbildung erläutert bekam, mir wurde auch klar, dass die Absolventen, wenn sie sich seine Worte zu Herzen nehmen und in die Welt hinaus tragen, die Möglichkeit haben, die Welt zu verändern.
Als „Navy SEAL“ musste McRaven eine der härtesten und intensivsten Militärausbildungen die es überhaupt gibt überstehen. Schon nach wenigen Wochen war seine SEAL Klasse von anfänglich 150 Mann auf gerade mal 35 reduziert. So hart war die Ausbildung. Und zu diesem Zeitpunkt war der Drill noch bei lange nicht vorbei. Doch er hielt durch. Und dank seines Durchhaltewillens können wir heute 10 wertvolle Lektionen von ihm lernen.
