I’m sitting on the shores of a lake somewhere between Flagler Beach and St. Augustine on the East Coast of Florida. The water whole that to my inexperienced eye simply resembles a pond or lake of some sorts is probably something entirely different. Something typical Floridan such as the Everglades. Who knows, maybe it is a part of the Everglades, how should I know. All I do know as a fact is, that the lake actually consists of ocean water and is fed by an inlet from the sea somewhere. Though there are some rather large ants circling my handbag and iPad I have to admit – Florida has many pretty enticing qualities. For one all the greenery. I am a tree lover for some reason and thus very fascinated by the trees I have seen so far in the US. Ceders that look old and gnarly and like right out of an ancient tale. And around here I am most taken by the Spanish Moss, the stuff hanging from all the trees, making them look so very Southern. I just love that! Call me weird, that’s one of my simple pleasures.
So while I’m sitting here, enjoying the scenery after having bathed my feet in the waters of an invitingly warm Atlantic and letting the sea breeze softly ruffle my hair, my beloved husband is busy with seminars and meetings. I do sincerely hope he’s having a most interesting and entertaining time with his fellow co-workers.
What I’ve seen of Florida’s East Coast so far is stunningly pretty: Whitish, soft sandy beaches with a glimmer of red sand here and there, lush green backgrounds to contrast the deep blue of both Ocean and sky as far as the eye can see. For summer season it seems also awfully peaceful, to be frank. Well, maybe the crowds are busy queueing up at all the entertainment parks such as Universal Studios, Sea World and – yes, Holy Land Experience.
While I’m halfway busy with a little mission (maybe more on that later) for my beloved better half I decided to not leave the Orlando area too much or get too busy with museums or such. Though the only attraction I am really interested on visiting anyway is the Cape Canaveral Space Center. I’d love to see that and awe at the scale of things there. And all the innovation, technology and geekdom that went – and probably still is going – on there.
Well, I hope I can content you with some of these photos. Beware that quite a few of them have been taken out of the driving car. No worries, it’s easy to do that when you’re practically alone on the road (amazing, right??!?) with cruise control going (and a rock station on the radio blaring away – yes, there’s a road trip for you :-)).
In that sense, bye for now and I shall tell you a little more about the rest of my adventures in Florida and also about the upcoming Swiss national holiday – so another day off for my Swiss friends this week on August 1 – in my next blog post.

Obwohl einige ziemlich grosse Ameisen meine Handtasche und meinen iPad umkreisen, muss ich zugeben – Florida hat viele ziemlich verlockende Qualitäten. Zum einen das ganze Grün überall. Aus irgend einem Grund liebe ich Bäume und bin daher äusserst fasziniert von den Bäumen die ich bisher in den USA gesehen habe. Zedern die so alt und knorrig aussehen, als wären sie einer uralten Sage entsprungen. Und in dieser Gegend hat es mir vor allem das Spanische Moos, das von all den Bäumen hängt und sie damit so südstaatlich aussehen lässt, angetan. Ich liebe das ganz einfach! Nennt mich seltsam, doch das ist eine meiner simplen Freuden.
Während ich also so hier sitze und die Szenerie geniesse nachdem ich meine Füsse im Wasser des einlandend warmen Atlantiks gebadet habe und die Meeresbrise mir das Haar zerzaust hat, ist mein geliebter Ehemann mächtig mit Seminaren und Meetings beschäftigt. Ich hoffe von Herzen, dass er eine äusserst interessante und auch unterhaltsame Zeit mit seinen Mitarbeitern verbringen kann.
Was ich bisher an Florida’s Ostküste gesehen habe, ist umwerfend hübsch: Weissliche, weiche Sandstrände mit einem Glimmer roten Sandes hier und dort, saftig grüne Hintergründe, welche soweit das Auge reicht einen exzellenten Kontrast zum tiefblauen Ozean und Himmel bieten. Dafür dass Sommerferien herrschen, scheint es auch ungemein friedlich, um ganz ehrlich zu sein. Nun, vielleicht stehen sich die Menschenmengen in all den Freizeitparks wie den Universal Studios, Sea World und – ja, Holy Land Experience die Füsse platt.
Während ich halbwegs mit einer kleinen Mission (vielleicht kann ich später etwas mehr davon berichten) für meine geliebte bessere Hälfte beschäftigt bin, habe ich mich entschlossen, mich nicht gross von der Gegend um Orlando fortzubewegen oder mich auch nicht zu sehr in Museen oder dergleichen zu vertiefen. Wobei die einzige Attraktion, die mich wirklich interessiert, das Kennedy Space Center auf Cape Canaveral ist. Ich würde es lieben, das zu sehen und über die ganze Grösse der ausgestellten Dinge zu staunen. Und über all die Innovation, Technologie und die Wissenschaftsfreaks, die es dort gab – oder heute noch gibt.
Nun, ich hoffe ich kann euch mit einigen dieser Fotos zufriedenstellen. Seid gewarnt: Etliche wurden aus dem fahrenden Auto aufgenommen. Aber keine Angst, das ist einfach wenn du praktisch alleine auf der Strasse bist (unglaublich, nicht??!?), mit dem Tempomat an (und einer Rock Station, die aus dem Radio dröhnt – genau, das nenn ich mal einen Road Trip :-)).
In diesem Sinne, tschüss für den Moment und ich werde euch in meinem nächsten Blog etwas mehr über meine restlichen Abenteuer in Florida und auch über den anstehenden Schweizerischen Bundesfeiertag – also einen weiteren freien Tag für meine Schweizer Freunde in der kommenden Woche am 1. You know, I have only been to Florida once, Many years ago (18?) in Panama City. I too loved the white sand and constantly wanted to taste it because it looked salty:) I also loved the very warm ocean water that was quiet and shallow for yards. Enjoy!
