We gave it another shot. Once again we were headed towards the Gulf of Mexico last Saturday, this time applying the knowledge my better half gained through extensive research: We were going to go the extra mile, so to say, and drive out to the island that protects the bay of Corpus Christi from the open Gulf of Mexico. The place we were heading for was Port Aransas on Mustang Island. (Für Deutsch hier klicken)
According to reports on the Internet jellyfish season on Texas coasts last from spring to late fall, some natives even claim it’s a year round thing. But apparently jellyfish, which drift with the current, oftentimes get stuck within the bay of Corpus Christi, unable to swim out by themselves as the most common jellyfish in the area, the moon jellyfish, are only capable of limited motion. So they depend on the current taking them back into the open waters of the gulf.
We arrived by the beach somewhere between 1 and 2pm due to me sleeping longer than anticipated (I set my alarm for PM instead of AM… stupid 12 hour time system…) and because we got caught up in a pretty bad traffic jam that was thankfully only starting to build up but Google maps indicated that 4 accidents in a row had happened.
That seems quite incredible and I still wonder if it was the same one or two accidents only being reported several times. Anyway, we were able to get around it and thus to the beach at a still acceptable time. But we immediately called off any thought of visiting the USS Lexington. Again. And we still plan on coming back just for that. After all, the Lexington is a movie star: All of the aircraft take off scenes in the movie Pearl Harbor, meaning both American and Japanese, were filmed on the museum ship anchored in the bay of Corpus Christi.
Even though we had a lot of fun on our last trip I have to say: The swimming experience this time was ways better. The gulf waters are almost as warm as the bay waters but soooo much clearer. We could see our feet standing hip deep in the water. Plus: No jellyfish attacks this time which to me personally was a highlight J It’s not that jellyfish stings are very painful it’s more the anticipation of the next one coming that disturbs your peace of mind and thus slightly ruins the whole experience.
So is the three plus hour ride from Austin worth the whole experience? You may ask yourself that as you unfold out of the car, slightly stiff and woozy, but once you lay on the beach after having set foot in the water and the waves started playing with you, the question becomes obsolete.

EIN WEITERER VERSUCH
Wir haben es nochmal probiert. Am Samstag waren wir erneut in Richtung Golf von Mexiko unterwegs, diesmal jedoch das Wissen anwendend, das meine bessere Hälfte mittels umfangreicher Recherchen gewonnen hatte: Diesmal wollten wir noch einen Schritt – oder eher eine Halbe Stunde Fahrt – weitergehen und zur Insel, welche die Bucht von Corpus Christi vom offenen Wasser des Golfs von Mexiko abschirmt, fahren. Der Ort zu dem wir unterwegs waren heisst Port Aransas auf der Mustang Insel.
Gemäss einschlägigen Kommentaren im Internet dauert die Quallen-Saison an der texanischen Küste vom Frühling bis zum späten Herbst, manche Einheimische behaupten gar, die Saison dauere das ganze Jahr an. Offensichtlich treiben Quallen mit der Strömung in die Bucht von Corpus Christi und bleiben dann darin hängen, da die meistverbreiteten Quallen in dieser Gegend, die Ohrenqualle, sich nur sehr eingeschränkt selber fortbewegen können. Dementsprechend sind sie wiederum von der Strömung abhängig, um wieder in die offenen Wasser des Golfs getrieben zu werden.
Wir kamen erst irgendwann zwischen 13 und 14 Uhr am Strand an, da ich etwas länger als erwartet schlief (ich hatte meinen Alarm für PM, also abends anstatt AM, also morgens, gesetzt… doofes 12 Stunden Zeitsystem…) und weil wir zudem noch in einen Stau gerieten, der sich glücklicherweise erst am Bilden war; Google Maps allerdings zeigte an, dass 4 Unfälle in einer Reihe passiert waren. Das scheint mir etwas unglaublich und ich frage mich noch immer, ob es nicht bloss ein oder zwei waren, die aber etliche Male gemeldet wurden. Wie auch immer, wir konnten die Verkehrsstockung umfahren und erreichten so den Strand doch noch zu einer akzeptablen Zeit. Doch wir sagten umgehend jegliche Gedanken, die USS Lexington diesmal zu besuchen, ab. Wieder. Und wir planen noch immer, zu einem Besuch nur für dieses monströse Schiff zurückzukommen. Denn immerhin ist sie ja ein Star, die Lexington: Alle Flugzeugstarts von einem Flugzeugträger im Film Pearl Harbor, und damit meine ich sowohl die Amerikanischen wie die Japanischen, wurden auf diesem Museumsschiff, das in der Bucht von Corpus Christi ankert, gefilmt.
Auch wenn wir auf unserem letzten Ausflug jede Menge Spass hatten, so muss ich doch sagen: Das Schwimmerlebnis dieses Mal war um einiges besser. Die Wasser des Golfes sind fast so warm wie die der Bucht, aber dabei soooo viel klarer. Wir konnten unsere Füsse hüfttief im Wasser stehend sehen. Plus: Keine Quallenattacken diesmal, was für mich persönlich ein Highlight darstellte J Es ist ja nicht so, dass Quallenstiche (was ja keine eigentlichen Stiche sondern einfach ein Brennen sind) sehr schmerzhaft sind, es ist eher die Erwartung des nächsten Kontakts, der einen die Gemütsruhe raubt und damit die gesamte Erfahrung ein klein wenig ruiniert.
Ist nun also die drei und mehr Stunden Fahrt von Austin die ganze Sache wert? Man mag sich das beim leicht steifen und benommenen Entfalten aus dem Auto nach der Ankunft fragen, doch sobald du erst einmal am Strand liegst nachdem du den ersten Fuss ins Wasser gesetzt und die Wellen ihr Spiel mit dir begonnen haben, wird diese Frage hinfällig.
